Developed by Evangelion director Hideaki Anno and produced by Studio Ghibli (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo), Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru (Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo) is a short film inspired by the Giant God Warriors from Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Also worth mentioning is that there’s no computer generated effects here, it’s all traditional filmmaking techniques like miniatures and actual honest-to-goodness explosions.
You can check out the full short from July 7 to October 8 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo as part of their “Kanchō Anno Hideaki Tokusatsu Hakubutsukan” (Curator Hideaki Anno’s Special Effects Museum) exhibition.
